It’s that time of the year again! The annual Warren Miller movie ushers in the unofficial start of the winter shred season. This year’s Warren Miller Movie: Like There’s No Tomorrow is brought to you in part by none other than SHRED itself. Shooting in far off places at the quality of Warren Miller films requires some dough and Shred was all to enthusiastic to chip in this year.

And it kicks off in SALT LAKE CITY on Friday and Saturday, October 14th and 15th, 8:00PM at Abravanel Hall! And Shred will be featuring their hottest newest gear inside and outside of the Hall. Touch it, feel it, try it on!

Check out the Warren Miller USA Schedule Here

It’s a deeply personal thing that we experience when we’re in our element, up on the mountain faced with untracked snow, deep blue skies, nothing but the deafening silence of the void and our breath crystalizing in the winter chill.

These are the moments we live for and these are the moments Warren Miller has captured for over 20 years of filmmaking.

It’s because of this synergy, this common understanding of why we do what we do, that Shred Optics has partnered with Warren Miller’s 2011 Film Tour of Like There’s No Tomorrow.

By sponsoring the Film Tour, Shred aligns itself with the message it truly believes is its heart and soul. Engineers, designers, athlete riders and testers all go to work every day and try to make Shred products that have style and technological superiority, but that retain the core Shred philosphy and feeling throughout the creation process.

We’re also excited to have Ted Ligety associated with Warren Miller. Just 2 weeks away, the 2011/2012 FIS Alpine Race Ski Season kicks off in Soelden, Austria. Multiple Giant Slalom globe and World Champion Ted Ligety gets ready to take on a deep field at the annual opener, the first test of his many months of preparation in the off-season with training camps in New Zealand and Chile, as well as Utah based strength and conditioning work under his belt.

The schedule then takes Ligety and the men out to Levi, Finland for a slalom event before hitting North American speed events in Lake Louise, Canada and Beaver Creek, Colorado, where last year Ligety pulled in a first place finish in the lone North America tech event, Giant Slalom.

It will no doubt be another long season for the racers, especially Ligety who has committed to all five disciplines. Even so, he aims to haul in a lot of hardware and has been invited to film with Warren Miller in Alaska for some big mountain, backcountry action that will test his conditioning one last time before the end of the winter snow season. If all goes according to plan, Ligety will be featured in the 2012 / 63rd annual Warren Miller Film (not in this year’s film as we previously announced).

Tune in to the season’s alpine skiing action at http://universalsports.com for live and recorded coverage.

A few weeks back, I blogged about another snowboard film that was to drop this fall. Argon Film’s “The Incredible Project” trailer looked good, but I was just not sure it would provide that “something extra” that would bring it above the fray of the many mediocre films out there.

Suffice it to say, I got some flack for sounding skeptical, especially since Shred is an actual sponsor! Never having said it actually “sucks”, I’m OK with my question. It’s true, no? There are so many films out there now, it’s going to take a little something special for it to be the cream that rises to the top!

I haven’t seen the Incredible Project section yet (only the trailer), but I have seen some more teasers for the other parts to Argon Films’ “Euphoria” videos. Here’s the general Euphoria trailer that Shred helped sponsor and that features newest shredder Florian Heim. By the look of it, the camera work is top notch. They really went for some amazing aerial and crane shots that impress. The editing looks way better than average too.

Check out the trailer here and see for yourself…

***UPDATE: we made a mistake when we stated that Ted will be in the upcoming Warren Miller film Like There’s No Tomorrow. In actuality, he’s scheduled to shoot for next year’s movie in the spring time. We apologize for the mistake. ***

Shredding is about the feeling you get when pushing your limits and having fun.

Warren Miller celebrates this philosophy, these transcendent moments and all the people who live for them.

“Its your annual reminder” says Miller’s website, “that winter is on its way and, with it, months of an adrenaline-fueled dance with gravity and dawns with fresh snow…”

“I’m just so excited to be included in this film” says Ted Ligety who has a prominent spot in the Alaska segment. “I grew up watching Warran Miller films as a grom and they always signaled the official start of the winter snow season.”

From India to Alaska, New Zealand and Chile, Ted and the world’s best skiers on some of the most challenging terrain ever are brought to big screens all over the world, including (see attached schedule):

40 towns in the UK;

Germany;

Australia & New Zealand;

80 towns in the USA;

6 stops in Canada.

The team at Shred – from the design and engineering hub in Italy to the North American headquarters in New Hampshire, shredders in the western frontier and scattered on mountain tops everywhere – are stoked to join the Warren Miller family and be a part of the long-standing tradition of awesome filmmaking.

Feel the message in the flick and take it to where you feel it in your heart – on the mountain.

Onward and Upward!

Unbelievable that race-season is already almost upon us. It just felt like the start of summer and now we're already getting reports of training camps and races. Well... we just got the word from Resi Stiegler that she's down in Valle Nevado, Chile, battling the blues. She'll be alright, she assures, she's just looking for that motivation... here's what she said:

Wow I feel like it has been forever since I blogged. I have been doing so many fun things and have been around so many fun inspirational people that I think I might have just overloaded.

I am in a unmotivated state. Not in a bad way, just different. I think maybe its the travel and high elevation. We are already back in Chile. It has been one year of skiing for me. We are in Valle Navado and the sun is shinning and the snow is white. I fried my face off even though I put 5 layers of sunscreen on. I have already passed out by the pool drooling and gone on some good free skiing muscle building runs. So things are great. We had our first day of training and it went well.

And here some sweet pics from their training camp. Looks like quite the swanky place!

Good to see some traditions haven’t died out, like Ted Ligety’s annual junker stunt show. Here Ted, Jon Olsson, Warner Nickerson & Mike Janyk hit the ramp and just massacre these junkers… good fun to watch, but please, kids, don’t try this at home!

You don’t see Ted upset a lot, but when it comes to the new bone-headed GS ski racing safety rules that FIS has released for the 2012 season that neither make the sport safer nor add to the fun and excitement, he’s not all too happy.

The rule, again designed to make the discipline safer (why is it needed, asks Ted, if the 3 injuries in GS the last few years were not caused by equipment, but rather by other factors in control of the race organizers), requires the ski radius minimum to be bumped up from the current 27m to no less tan 40m. The results, Ligety explains, will be a discipline that’s no safer, less turn-y, and ruled by bigger, heavier guys who can handle the beefier skis. The more agile and smaller skiers will be at a severe disadvantage.

All this will have the ultimate effect that the sport will be less exciting, not at all safer and most tragically suck the interest for the sport right out of the new younger generations.

But my words don’t do justice to the issue. Read Ted Ligety’s thoughts yourself and judge for yourself just how unhappy he is…

>> Read Ted’s thoughts at his blog: http://www.tedligety.com/

What do you think? Do you agree with Ted or do you think FIS is making a good call? Share your thoughts with a comment, Facebook post or Tweet.

***UPDATE***
FIS and Ski Racing Suppliers met on August 24th, 2011 and came to the conclusion that the GS minimum radius would be reduced from 40m to 35m. I’d like to think racer revolt had a little something to do with it.

I’m not sure whether there’s been snowboard video glut like this in years past, but it seems like everyone and their mother is doing one now.

This latest snowboard video is from Argon Films and from what I gather, it’s called “The Incredible Project.” Seems they are not trying to outdo some of the kings of big mountain and instead they are aiming for — according to teaser #1 — rad park scenes.

Red Scarlet represents an "affordable" entry into the much heralded world of Red

And why not? If you’ve got the riders, a sweet HD cam (you got digi SLR’s like the Canon 5d, affordable HD camcorders, and the much anticipated RED SCARLET that could put a 4MPX progressive camera in your hands for $6000 in late summer in time for the winter snowboard season), and the inexpensive set of a fully accessible terrain park, all you need are the VIDEO CHOPS to make a good flick.

And of course, that’s the rub. With everyone able to make snowboard video now, I’m sure we’re going to see a lot of crappy, run-of-the-mill videos. We’re probably going to get a few years of enthusiastic, but amateur snowboard videos with neither sustain sick shots, nor any hint of a story and we will be thoroughly bored. But as time goes on and the video peeps need to make some money to pay bills, they’ll abandon their snowboard video dreams and move on, leaving only the strong.

Question today is: is Argon Films “The Incredible Project” going to be a suck-ass flick or do the guys have the chops?

You decide as we feature the forthcoming teasers. According to the video description:

The Incredible Project was brought into life by Swatch Snowpark Soeldens Parkdesigner Rudi Wyhlidal and offers a cool mixture of big jumps, corners, Pole Jams and various other transfers. Reason enough for the Argonauts to check this Multiobstacle out and rip it into peaces. The next Teaser from another big jump in Alta Badia follows soon.
